Air Platform Meeting

[Publication Date: September 2017]

On September 26th and 27th 2017 the LIFE projects AIRUSE and IMPROVE have hosted the LIFE international networking event on air quality (LIFE Platform Meeting on Air Quality), entitled “Abating urban exposure to air pollutants”.

Purpose of the event, organized in strict cooperation with the Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV) of the European Commission, the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EASME) and the monitoring team NEEMO, has been to share the state-of-art of strategies and measures for the improvement of the air quality conditions in the European cities. Main current issues related to the air pollution generated by the different pollution sources, including road traffic, industry and domestic heating, have been discussed.

The meeting has been held during two days and has been structured over three different technical sessions: Urban Air Quality Measures, Citizen Exposure While Commuting, and Models and Tools for Air Quality Management. The BrennerLEC project has been presented by the the Provincial Agency for the Protection of the Environment of Trento during this last session.

The meeting has been an excellent occasion for sharing information on the state-of-art on this topic an on the contents of different concluded and on-going projects, for creating contacts with other LIFE project responsibles and get in touch with representatives of the DG ENV, EASME and NEEMO.

Following LIFE projects have been presented:

LIFE AIRUSE, a Spanish project that has studied and test a set of mitigation measures of the concentrations of particulate matters, identifying the most efficient ones;

LIFE IMPROVE, a Spanish project that has implemented measures for the improvement of the air quality conditions in Barcelona;

LIFE AUTO, a French project that has tested different solutions (including fuel additives) in order to reduce the pollution produced by diesel motors;

LIFE CLEAN-HEAT, a German project that has deepened possible countermeasures in order to reduce the pollution produced by the burning of the wood;

LIFE E-MOBILITY, a Dutch project that has promoted the diffusion of the e-mobility;

LIFE GYSTRA, a Spanish project that was recently launched that aims to develop a real-time measurement system of the emissions produced by road vehicles;

LIFE Małopolska, an IP Polish project that aims to target the problem of air quality in the Southern part of Poland in an holistic way;

LIFE PREPAIR, an IP Italian project that aims to target the problem of air quality in the Po Valley in an holistic way;

LIFE MINOx-STREET, a Spanish project that has deepened the real performance of photocatalytic materials in order to reduce NOx emissions.

LIFE REDUST, a Finnish project that has deepened the real possibilities to reduce the concentrations of particulate matter through new road management techniques.
