Questionnaire 2019

[Publication Date: October 2019]

As part of the BrennerLEC project, a new social monitoring campaign was launched to update the picture of the level of acceptance of the experimental measures for the dynamic management of motorway traffic on the A22, in particular the dynamic reduction of speed limits for environmental reasons (reduction in concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions) and the fluidity of traffic during seasonal peak days. Participation in the questionnaire has been open to all interested parties and aimed in particular at motorists who have travelled along the motorway during one of the experiments organized in the project from September 2018 to December 2019.

The results of the previous campaign were also published, with which users’ impressions were collected in relation to the first experimental tests of dynamic speed reduction carried out on the A22 motorway in the sections between Egna / Ora / Termeno and San Michele and between Trento and Rovereto. The survey was attended by 3,777 people, of whom about 80% live in Trentino-Alto Adige, with a participation equally divided between the two provinces. The survey also includes an additional survey carried out in the service areas which allowed to obtain the feedback of more than 250 occasional travellers, both Italian and from foreign countries. The total number of responses obtained compared to the survey made at the beginning of the project almost tripled and allowed to have a solid picture of the level of knowledge and acceptance of the user towards the experimental measures of the project.

The survey showed a good level of knowledge of the project between the local inhabitants: on average 60-70% of the respondents said they were familiar with the project. As expected, the project is less known by occasional travellers (40%). As far as the degree of acceptance of dynamic speed limits is concerned, a difference is confirmed between the residents who use the motorway more frequently and those who use it more sporadically: the latter are on average more favourable, in the order of 50%. The most frequent motorway users are against the dynamic reduction of speed limits for purely environmental reasons, with a lower degree of acceptance, in the order of 30%. Although the benefits of the experimental measures are limited, non-resident users are the target group that has on average been most favourable to the experimental project measures.
